GOULBURN DISTRICT COMMUNITY PALLIATIVE CARE AND ONCOLOGY SUPPORT GROUP(Member of UHA of NSW)
We are a group of Volunteers who raise funds for the Palliative Care and Oncology Services in Goulburn.
The Palliative Care Service is provided by a skilled team who give information, support and care to the patient with cancer and to those with an incurable disease. It also provides support and assistance to their families to develop the skills necessary for the patient to stay at home as long as desired.
Goulburn Mulwaree Council Mayor Paul Stephenson waving the flag for the start of the 2006 Charity Cycle Ride at the front of the St John of God Hospital.
Our small Support Group was formed in 1990 and in those 17 years we have raised approx $100,000. As well as funding medical equipment we have funded the purchase of three vehicles for the Palliative Care nursing staff. There is a constant need to replace worn out equipment, as well as updating obsolete medical aids. The comfort and care of Palliative Care and Oncology patients and the safety of our nurses are our main concerns.
Equipment such as special beds and mattresses, wheelchairs, shower chairs, oxygen concentrators, syringe drivers (for pain control) is all available to the patient free of charge. This equipment is provided by funds raised by our group through various fund raising events and sponsorships e.g. the “Goulburn to Citi” Charity Ride.
Last year funds from the Bike Ride paid for a new Toyota Rav4 vehicle for the Palliative Care Nurses to visit patients in their homes within 150kms radius of Goulburn, often over rough country roads, in all weathers, 24/7.
The Oncology Service is based at Bourke Street Health Service (formerly St John of God Hospital) and is an outpatient centre that offers comprehensive medical assessments by visiting consultants, comprehensive nursing assessments and administration of chemotherapy by specialized nursing staff for people with a wide range of cancers.
The Palliative Care Service provides support and symptom management to patients receiving Chemotherapy and also Radiotherapy.
